Squaw Canyon to Lost Canyon Hike

Hiked about 8.6 miles in about 8 hours passing through shrubby desert, slickrock ledges (sandstone that is hard for horses to get a grip on with their hooves, but like walking on sandpaper for boots and sneakers.) with spectacular views of odd formations, lush canyon bottoms with pools of water, trees and birds, cliff faces requiring climbing (once with a ladder.)

The visitor map describes the hike as “a great introduction to the landscape of the Needles, connecting two canyons for a loop across varied terrain.  The route between the canyons climbs steep grades that are dangerous when wet and may make people with a fear of heights uncomfortable.”

Bethany only feared for our lives a couple times.

The little piles of rocks  “cairns” were our only clue as to which way to go on the rocky outcrops.

Evan thought it was a really cool big rocky hot hike.

Gary thought it was a little hairy in a few spots crossing over between the two canyons.  Good view of the canyon walls.

Things we thought were cool.  Gary caught the raven in flight.
